How to tune a guitar to standard tuning
Standard tuning stacks the six strings in fourths, except for a major third between the G and B strings. Starting from the thickest string that is E2 (82.41 Hz), A2 (110 Hz), D3 (146.83 Hz), G3 (196 Hz), B3 (246.94 Hz), then the thinnest string back at E4 (329.63 Hz), two octaves above the low E. Pluck one string at a time, let it ring clearly, and watch the tuner needle: a positive cents reading means the string is sharp and needs loosening, a negative reading means it is flat and needs tightening.
If a string is wildly out of tune the pitch detector may lock onto a harmonic instead of the fundamental. Play the open string firmly, mute the other strings with your fretting hand, and get within a semitone or two using a rough reference before fine tuning with cents. New strings stretch and go flat quickly, so retune a couple of times after changing a set.
