Standard ukulele tuning for soprano, concert and tenor sizes is G4, C4, E4 and A4, remembered by generations of players as "My Dog Has Fleas". It is a reentrant tuning, meaning the fourth string is not the lowest pitch, which trips up anyone expecting strings to run low to high like a guitar.
Why ukulele tuning is reentrant
In standard reentrant tuning the fourth string is tuned to G4 at 392 Hz, which is higher than the third string C4 at 261.63 Hz. So the string order by pitch is actually C, E, G, A rather than climbing straight from the fourth string to the first. The second and first strings continue upward as expected: E4 at 329.63 Hz and A4 at 440 Hz.
This layout gives the ukulele its bright, chiming sound and is what almost every songbook, chord chart and beginner tutorial assumes. Some players restring with a low G fourth string, a full octave below standard, for a wider range closer to a guitar; that is a deliberate alternate tuning, not the standard covered here.
