Tuning a violin string by string

The four strings sit a fifth apart: G3 at 196 Hz, D4 at 293.66 Hz, A4 at 440 Hz and E5 at 659.26 Hz. Many players tune the A string first to concert pitch, then match D and G below it and E above it, checking each pair of adjacent strings for a clean, beatless fifth once they are close.

Fine tuners on the tailpiece make small adjustments easier and safer than the pegs, especially on the thinner, higher-tension E string, which can snap if over-tightened quickly with a peg. Bow each string cleanly and let it ring before reading the tuner, since a scratchy or muted bow stroke gives the pitch detector a noisier signal to work with.
